Shipping Position Editor, Yinka Onigbinde steps in as MARAN President

Shipping Position Daily Newspaper’s Assistant Editor, Oluyinka Onigbinde, is now the President of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), the parental body for every maritime association in Nigeria.

He was elected as the new helmsman at the union’s election held at their Secretariat, in Lagos, today.

Onigbinde pulled a total of 20 votes to emerge winner while his closest rival, Pastor John Iwori, scored 13 votes.

Onigbinde succeeds the Chairman of the MARAN Caretaker Committee, Tunde Ayodele.

He was quoted to have promised to promote the rights of their members, establish accountability mechanisms, and foster training to improve maritime industry standards, ultimately ensuring the public receives accurate and unbiased information.

The election, which witnessed active participation by members of the association, also produced other executive officers that will pilot the affairs of the association for the duration of their tenure.

Obasi Sylvanus is the newVice President , while Fabian Anawo was elected as General Secretary. Ojelabi Amina is the Assistant General Secretary, while Ayanfeoluwa Providence is the Public Relations Officer (PRO).

Ruth Umuna was elected Treasurer, while Ambrose Okehi emerged as Financial Secretary.

Speaking with Spynews shortly after his election, Onigbinde said that he would embark on projects that would bring attention and development to the maritime industry, generate revenue and serve as training ground for members and prospective maritime journalists and also to put mechanisms and structures in place that would ensure that maritime journalists are treated with courtesies and dignity by the stakeholders.
