MARAN President Onigbinde Wins Maritime Reporter of the Year

The President, Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN), and Assistant Editor of Shipping Position Daily, Oluyinka Onigbinde, has been declared as the Maritime Reporter of the Year Award.

The prestigious Award was given to him at the 12th Nigerian Transport Lecture and Awards organised by Transport Day Media.

The organisers of the event said, the award was in recognition of Onigbinde’s outstanding contributions to maritime journalism, his consistency in industry reporting, and his commitment to promoting informed discourse on the nation’s transport and blue economy

The award ceremony formed part of the annual Nigerian Transport Lecture, one of the country’s foremost gatherings of policymakers, regulators, transport operators, academics, and journalists, where critical issues affecting Nigeria’s transport sector are examined and excellence within the industry is recognised.

This well attended event, themed “Intermodal Transportation Safety in Nigeria: Prospects, Challenges and Contributions to National Growth,” featured presentations by leading industry experts, including former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, who delivered the keynote address on improving transportation safety across all modes of transport.

Onigbinde’s emergence as Maritime Reporter of the Year was widely applauded by industry stakeholders, many of whom described the award as a fitting recognition of years of impactful journalism and unwavering dedication to the maritime industry.

Over the years, the award-winning journalist has distinguished himself through in-depth investigative reports, exclusive interviews, policy analyses, and balanced coverage of Nigeria’s ports, shipping, customs, freight forwarding, and broader blue economy.

As Assistant Editor of Shipping Position Daily, his employers said, he has consistently reported on major developments shaping the maritime sector while providing critical insights into government policies, port reforms, trade facilitation, shipping operations, and logistics.

His latest recognition adds to a growing list of honours he has received for his contributions to the maritime industry. Earlier, he was among senior editors of Shipping Position Daily honoured with a Special Maritime Recognition Award for his impact on maritime journalism and industry development.

Speaking shortly after receiving the award, Onigbinde expressed appreciation to the organisers for the recognition, describing it as both humbling and motivating.

He dedicated the award to his colleagues at Shipping Position Daily, members of MARAN, mentors, industry stakeholders, and everyone who has supported his journalism career over the years.

According to him, the recognition serves as a renewed challenge to continue pursuing factual, balanced, and impactful reporting that contributes to the growth and development of Nigeria’s maritime and transport sectors.
