UNILAG, SIFAX Group Equip Students for Key Leadership Roles in Maritime

The SIFAX Group, in collaboration with the University of Lagos (UNILAG), is empowering and preparing the youth to shape the future of the nation’s maritime policies and the blue economy.

 

This was disclosed by the Group Executive Chairman of SIFAX, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, at the company’s 10th Annual Maritime Conference held at the main auditorium of the University of Lagos, today.

 

 

Represented by the Group Coordinating Director, Mrs. Wunmi Eniola-Jegede, Afolabi stated that the conference is a collaboration between the Maritime Forum and students from the University of Lagos, driven by a mutual passion for maritime affairs and industry growth.

 

His words: “What began as a modest student initiative has grown into the largest student-led maritime conference in West Africa.  We could not be prouder to have walked that road alongside them.

 

The purpose of this annual gathering, Dr Afolabi said, has remained the same since the very beginning: we set out to build a serious, knowledge-driven space that bridges the gap between the industry and the lecture hall—connecting what is taught with what is actually practiced.

 

That shared vision, the maritime industry giant added, has placed everyone in the same room with the sector’s real decision-makers. We wanted young people to look past their textbooks, ask difficult questions, and speak directly with those shaping policies and equations.

 

The landmark 10th anniversary, themed “Ten Tides of Impact: Raising a Generation to Position Nigeria as Africa’s Blue Giant,” was a well-attended event that brought together the institution’s students, lecturers, and various stakeholders in the maritime industry.

The student-led event which was held at the UNILAG Main Auditorium drew industry experts, government officials, and thousands of participants to shape conversations around the nation’s blue economy.
The 10th year anniversary conference, Afolabi said,  marks a decade of promoting maritime education, policy dialogue and youth development.

 

The event, he added, has grown into West Africa’s largest student-led maritime conference.

 

President of the Maritime Forum, Dare Tunde Damilola, described the 10th edition as more than an anniversary celebration, noting that it was designed to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry while preparing a new generation of maritime professionals and policy leaders.

 

Guests at the highly celebrated event included the representative of the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, alongside the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, and the Dean of the University’s Faculty of Law.
