2027 Race to Nasarawa Govt. House: One Bride, 15 Suitors

With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially publishing the final list of 15 valid governorship candidates for Nasarawa State, the starting gun for the 2027 race has been fired.

The political landscape in Lafia has instantly transformed into a high-stakes arena. For an open-seat election where the incumbent, Governor Abdullahi Sule, is serving out his final term, the stakes could not be higher.

Nasarawa Government House has become the ultimate “one bride,” and the 15 suitors on the INEC ballot are ready to pull out all the stops to win her hand.

This 15-candidate list signals that the era of predictable, two-horse races in Nasarawa State is officially over. What we are about to witness is a complex political battle royale.

In previous cycles, the contest was largely a direct heavyweight bout between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). But the 2027 chessboard is far more fragmented and unpredictable.

The emergence of viable third-force contenders has shattered the old mathematics, meaning that winning this bride will require more than just relying on party structures; it will require precise, tactical grassroots mobilisation across the state’s three senatorial zones.

The core dynamics driving this battle royale center around zoning, ethnic arithmetic, and internal party fractures. The ruling APC is facing the challenge of managing succession politics, as various interests within the party jostle to replace Governor Sule.

On the other side, the PDP is desperate to reclaim a state it views as historically its own, relying on its deep-rooted networks in Nasarawa South and West.

However, the presence of smaller, highly aggressive parties on the INEC list means that protest votes from disgruntled party members who lost out during the primaries will find ready alternatives.

Furthermore, the 2027 race will be decided by local, bread-and-butter issues rather than endorsements.

The people of Nasarawa from the farmers in Doma to the civil servants in Lafia and the massive, urban-sprawl voting population along the Mararaba-Nyanya gateway to the FCT—are demanding practical governance. They want concrete solutions for rural insecurity, agricultural development, and local economy revival.

Any suitor who thinks they can win this bride simply by flashing big money or carrying Abuja titles may be shocked on election day.

As the campaign engines roar to life, the 15 suitors must realise that truth does not need to shout; it just needs time. Some Nasarawa’s voters have grown wiser and highly discerning. They may carefully scrutinise the character, track record, and sincerity of every candidate on that list.

The race for Lafia is wide open, the chessboard is set, and the suitors are marching out.
