Motorists were stranded at the weekend when petroleum tankers and container trucks blocked a lane of the Eleko Road, causing traffic disruption around the Lekki Port and Dangote Refinery axis in Lagos.

Findings by the Spynews revealed that tanker drivers heading to the Dangote Refinery in Lekki and container trucks carrying cargo from the Lekki Deep Seaport had occupied the outward lane of the road.

The development forced motorists to resort to driving against the normal flow of traffic on the inward lane, particularly from the Dangote Refinery entrance towards the Lekki Port axis.

Speaking on the development, President of the Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA), Suleiman Bello, attributed the recurring traffic congestion to lapses in enforcement by traffic control officers.

According to him, articulated vehicle drivers often take over the road whenever traffic enforcement officers reduce their operations in the area.

“It normally happens like this anytime there is a lapse in enforcement operations by traffic control officers.

“You know how these articulated vehicle drivers behave once they notice that traffic enforcement officials have eased off.

“The surprising thing is that once traffic enforcement officials get there, the articulated vehicles will disappear.

“The Electronic-Call-Up is serving the area, but once there is a lull in enforcement operations, the articulated vehicle drivers take over the road, leaving confusion everywhere,” he said.

As at the time of filing this report, only the inward section of the Eleko road was free of traffic.

The outward lane was blocked by articulated vehicles, leaving motorists going in and out of the axis to ply only the inward lane of the road.
