ANAMBRA: APGA Wins all 21 LGAs, 365 Wards in Council Polls

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has declared the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) winner of last Saturday’s local government elections in the state.

Chairman of the commission, Genevieve Osakwe, announced the results at the ANSIEC secretariat in Awka, saying the election was conducted peacefully and in accordance with the state’s electoral laws and guidelines.

Osakwe said APGA won all 21 local government areas and 365 wards in the state.

She said APGA fielded candidates across the 21 local government areas, while the Young Progressives Party (YPP) fielded a candidate for the chairmanship election in Anambra East.

According to her, APGA secured victory in 20 local government areas through a “yes or no” voting pattern because it fielded sole candidates there.

In Anambra East, where YPP also fielded a candidate, APGA polled 50,169 votes against YPP’s 1,658 votes.“I hereby declare the APGA candidates winners after polling the majority of votes for all the positions,” Osakwe said.

She also reaffirmed the councilorship results earlier declared at the local government level and formally approved the election outcome.

The ANSIEC chairman congratulated the winners and urged them to discharge their responsibilities in the interest of their constituents.

She also called on candidates who lost the election to accept the outcome in the spirit of democratic competition.

Osakwe commended voters, political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, ANSIEC personnel, and the media for their roles in conducting the election.

She, however, noted that parties and candidates with legitimate grounds to challenge the results could pursue available legal avenues.
