Tribute to a Legal Icon and Master Administrator: Alhaji Yahaya Bukar-Gana
By Ibrahim Nasiru
The news of the sudden passing of our dear colleague, boss, and brother, Alhaji Yahaya Bukar-Gana, on September 2, 2026, came to us as a profound and devastating shock.
It is incredibly difficult to capture the departure of a man whose presence was naturally charming, whose professional brilliance was undeniable, and with whom we shared unforgettable moments both in official boardrooms and informal social settings.
Alhaji Yahaya was the ultimate gentleman—a leader who combined rare administrative competence with a warm, approachable heart that endeared him to everyone who crossed his path. His exit leaves a massive vacuum in our hearts and across the nation he served so selflessly.
From the very beginning of his professional journey, Alhaji Yahaya dedicated his life to upholding justice and the rule of law. After completing his legal education with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Law from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, he threw himself completely into public service.
He built a solid foundation as a State Counsel in Maiduguri, served as Legal Adviser to the Special Investigations Panel, and directed legal affairs at the Borno Radio Television Corporation.
When Yobe State was created, he stepped up to serve his home state with absolute dedication, rising to become the Director of Civil Litigation and eventually the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice. In that high office, he set a gold standard for legal practice and ethical leadership that younger lawyers still emulate today.
Seeking new horizons to deploy his immense talents, Alhaji Yahaya later transferred his exceptional skills to the federal level, joining the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) in the year 2000. Starting as a Principal Manager for Industrial Relations and Welfare Services, his unmatched capacity for human capital development and corporate policy implementation saw him rise steadily through the ranks.
He brought immense value to the NPA, serving with distinction on vital panels like the Long Service Award Committee and the Review of Wages Committee.
Whether he was handling complex union negotiations, looking after staff welfare, or managing the NPA Abuja Liaison Office as General Manager, he treated workers with utmost fairness and dignity, proving that true leadership is about elevating people.
Beyond his local exploits, Alhaji Yahaya was a globally minded professional who constantly sharpened his leadership capacity. His impressive resume boasts advanced training certifications across Europe, the United States, and Asia, focusing on managerial development, policy analysis, and strategic decision-making.
Notably, in March 2020, he attended the elite leadership program at Harvard University in Boston, further cementing his status as a world-class administrator. Yet, despite his high academic achievements and exposure to global boardrooms, he remained completely rooted in humility, kindness, and unyielding loyalty to his friends and colleagues.
We take comfort in the fact that while Alhaji Yahaya Bukar-Gana has passed on to the great beyond, his legacy of integrity, dedication to the rule of law, and profound humanity remains fully alive.
He lived a life of purposeful impact, leaving behind a pristine reputation that his family, his home state of Yobe, and his professional colleagues can always carry with immense pride.
We pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus, and gives his immediate family the fortitude to bear this monumental loss.
Rest in perfect peace, our wonderful boss and irreplaceable friend.
