The Battle for Nasarawa North: Inside the Multi-Party Race for the Red Chamber

The political architecture of the Nasarawa North Senatorial District has rapidly evolved into one of the most fiercely contested battlegrounds in North-Central Nigeria.

Following the structural shift created by the recent June 2026 sub-national by-election to fill the legislative vacuum left by the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, the zone has entered a high-stakes preparation phase for the 2027 general elections. Unlike previous cycles dictated by superficial ethno-religious alignments, the emerging race is a direct collision between established state machinery, resurgent opposition blocks, and fresh alternative parties.

For a district historically rich in agrarian output but severely underserved in critical infrastructure, the choice of who represents Akwanga, Nasarawa Eggon, and Wamba Local Government Areas in the Red Chamber is fundamentally a debate over economic emancipation and quality representation.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) enters the legislative contest carrying the full weight of executive dominance, yet it faces complex internal dynamics. Governor Abdullahi Sule, standing as the heavyweight contender, has officially transitioned his political machinery toward the legislative track, securing the APC Nasarawa North Senatorial ticket in a high-turnout primary. Sule’s candidacy is framed by his supporters as a strategic reward for his industrialization strides and sub-national infrastructure investments.

For the APC, deploying a sitting governor is a calculated attempt to maintain a definitive gridlock over the zone’s 35 electoral wards.

However, Hon. Silas Ali Agara, the former Deputy Governor and former Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), remains an indispensable structural force within the ruling party. Having resigned his federal appointment to contest the seat, Agara publicly rejected the primary outcome, labeling the exercise a sham marred by irregularities. Yet, dismissing any rumours of defection, he has firmly declared his 100 per cent loyalty to the APC while actively pursuing internal constitutional channels to address the primary outcome.

His deep grassroots networks remain a vital factor, especially as influential regional elders actively lobby him to pivot toward the 2027 gubernatorial succession race to succeed Governor Sule.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), historically entrenched within the Nasarawa North territory, is aggressively capitalizing on elite fatigue to retake the zone. Chief Benbella Anthony Madaki, holding the traditional title of Wazirin Mada, has emerged as a high-altitude contender after officially obtaining his PDP Senate nomination forms. Heavily backed by a coalition of youth emancipators and community networks, Madaki’s platform centers entirely on reversing the district’s social amenity deficit. His structural positioning is designed to appeal directly to voters fatigued by career establishment figures.

This push is heavily reinforced by Dr. David Emmanuel Ombugadu, the party’s two-time gubernatorial standard-bearer, who remains the intellectual and structural anchor of the PDP in the region. While central stakeholders continue to debate his role regarding a potential renewed executive bid, his massive personal followings across the Nasarawa Eggon axis serve as a vital legislative lever. Any winning opposition formula in Nasarawa North must inevitably pass through Ombugadu’s established grassroots machinery.

Frustrated by traditional party setups, voters in Nasarawa North are increasingly turning toward alternative standard-bearers who offer clear, non-aligned legislative options. Arc. Duba Ishaya Dodo, professionally known as DID, has officially locked in his position as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Senatorial Candidate following a successful substitution primary in Akwanga.

Backed by incumbent House of Representatives member Jeremiah Umaru, Dodo’s platform presents a highly technical, infrastructure-driven alternative. The SDP’s early deployment signals a well-funded, coordinated attempt to absorb voters seeking a break from both the APC and PDP.

Simultaneously, Dr. Njehntengazoka James Danladi represents a fresh ideological paradigm, having been formally affirmed as the New Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer in a process verified by electoral umpires. His campaign bypasses traditional backroom political engineering, focusing strictly on a platform of institutional accountability, youth inclusion, and community-led legislative subventions.

Ultimately, the Nasarawa North senatorial race cannot be won by passive reliance on traditional godfathers. The successful candidate must navigate a complex grid where Governor Sule’s executive power will be directly challenged by the structural grassroots appeal of Madaki and Ombugadu, alongside the rapid momentum of third-force options like Architect Dodo. For analysts and campaign planners, monitoring how these distinct party lines mobilize their local ward committees over the coming months will provide the definitive script for the 2027 sub-national outcome.
